Ontological Counselling
Ontological counselling in West Vancouver — depth-oriented therapy on the level of being, identity, and meaning. English & Farsi. Free 15- min consult.

Ontology is the philosophical study of being. Ontological counselling is the therapeutic study of who you are — beneath what you do, what you think, and what you have been performing — and how to live closer to that.
The word ontological sits in our clinic's name for a reason. It is the modality that most fully captures what makes Baraka distinctive among counselling clinics on the North Shore.
Most contemporary therapy works at the level of behaviour, thought, or emotion — what you are doing, what you are thinking, what you are feeling. These levels matter, and we work with them. But beneath them is a deeper level: the level of being itself. Who are you? What is your life for? What is the shape of the self you have constructed, and is it the shape of the self you actually are?
This is the territory of ontological counselling, and it is what many of our clients — especially those drawn to depth and meaning — come to Baraka for. Available in English and Farsi, in person at our Ambleside office and online across British Columbia.
What ontological counselling actually does
Ontological work asks a different set of questions than symptom-focused therapy. Not only "what is wrong and how do we fix it?" but also:
- Who are you, really? Beneath the roles, the achievements, the family expectations, the cultural script — who are you when none of that is performing?
- What kind of being have you been being? What identity have you constructed, what costs has it carried, and is it still the right one for you?
- What is your life asking of you now? The crisis that brought you to therapy may not be a problem to solve. It may be an invitation to become someone you have not yet been.
- What have you disowned to be acceptable? Whose voice has been driving you? What would change if you stopped?
- What is the larger story you are inside? The personal symptom often makes most sense when seen as a chapter in a longer narrative — your family's, your culture's, your soul's.
Ontological work treats psychological symptoms not only as problems to be eliminated but also, often, as signals. The depression, the anxiety, the burnout, the relational impasse may be carrying information about a life that has stopped being yours. Working with the signal — instead of only silencing it — is sometimes the key.
When ontological counselling is the right fit
This isn't the right approach for everyone, and we'll tell you so honestly if it doesn't fit your situation. It works well when:
- You're in a major life transition that feels bigger than just "a problem"
- You've achieved a lot externally and feel internally hollow or lost
- You're drawn to questions of meaning, identity, and purpose
- You've done some therapy before and felt that something deeper was being missed
- You're comfortable with slow work, ambiguity, and not-knowing
- You sense that the symptom you came in with is pointing to something larger
- You've engaged with depth literature, philosophy, or contemplative traditions and felt resonance
- Conventional symptom-focused therapy has helped to a point but stopped helping
How ontological counselling integrates with other modalities
Ontological work is not a stand-alone protocol. It is a way of holding therapy. We weave it together with:
- Cognitive and ACT components for the symptom-management dimension
- Somatic and body-based work because being lives in the body, not just the mind
- Jungian and depth-oriented frames for the symbolic, archetypal, and dream layers
- IFS and parts work for the internal multiplicity that ontological work meets again and again
- Existential approaches for the questions of meaning, freedom, and finitude
- Cultural fluency — Iranian-Canadian clients often bring rich philosophical and poetic traditions (Rumi, Hafez, Sufi mysticism, Iranian philosophical thought) that fit ontological work organically
The result is therapy that is both clinically grounded and capable of going to the depth that many of our clients are looking for.
What sessions look like
Sessions are 50 minutes (75-minute extended sessions available). The pacing is gentler than most CBT-style therapy — we don't rush through, and we don't measure success only by symptom reduction. Many of our ontological clients come weekly for the first phase and shift to biweekly later. Most stay for at least six months; some stay for a year or more for the longer arc of work.
You will not be asked to "perform depth" or to be philosophical. You will be invited to come as you are, and we will go where the work goes.
